Behaviour Guidance & Prohibited Practice

At Tender Loving Daycare, we believe that all children deserve to be treated with respect, understanding, and kindness. Our goal is to support children in learning self-regulation, building respectful relationships, and developing confidence in their social-emotional skills.

Positive Guidance Strategies

As described in the Parent Handbook, we guide children using positive, developmentally appropriate strategies including:

  • Setting clear and consistent expectations

  • Redirecting inappropriate behavior to more positive alternatives

  • Encouraging problem-solving and cooperative play

  • Supporting children in identifying and expressing their feelings

  • Providing choices to promote independence

  • Offering praise and encouragement for positive actions

We acknowledge that all behavior is a form of communication and strive to understand each child’s needs and emotions in the moment.

Prohibited Practices

In accordance with Ontario’s Child Care and Early Years Act (CCEYA), the following practices are strictly prohibited at our centre under all circumstances:

  • Corporal punishment of a child (e.g., spanking, slapping)

  • Physical restraint (unless to prevent immediate harm)

  • Locking the exits or confining a child without supervision

  • Deprivation of basic needs such as food, shelter, or comfort

  • Use of harsh, degrading, or threatening language

  • Deliberate humiliation or emotional distress

These actions are not tolerated from any staff, student, or volunteer. All staff are trained annually on acceptable behavior guidance and prohibited practices to ensure a safe and respectful environment for all.

Collaborating with Families

We recognize the importance of working together with families to support each child’s emotional and behavioral development. If concerns arise, educators will communicate directly with parents and work together to develop consistent approaches that support the child’s growth.
